NO SPOILERS, BUT SOME ANALYSIS. Left completely shook for a while after this one. This is not a movie about heroes or villains. This doesn't have any flamboyance or cinematic tricks. It's a simple character breakdown. Literally a breakdown. It's an immersion into the mind and life of the most legendary character ever played on screen. Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger, Jared Leto all have stepped into these shoes and created something memorable. Ummm maybe a raincheck on Jared Leto's joker. Anyway, supported by extremely relevant music scoring, and breathtaking cinematography and complimented by Joaquin Phoenix's intense, sometimes downright distrubing method acting, Todd Phillips (the director of The Hangover trilogy, lmao what?) has really created something special, and will be talked about for years to come. Probably gain a lot of traction at the Oscars as well. Im also suddenly invested in the DC universe, if they are rebooting it in this tone. I definitely want to see the joker again, but also tbh I sorta don't want to. This was perfect.
The timing is uncanny, with so much happening around the world, it feels like we are just an incident away from anarchy. What is your breaking point? What happens when you truly have nothing to lose? That's when life becomes a comedy from a tragedy.
