In 2020, with the rise of rap, edm and solo bedroom pop, bands are slowly losing relevance. The ones that are still relevant, I feel have lost touch with their original sound, Maroon 5, Coldplay, I'm looking at you 🙄 But enter Matt Healy and The 1975. One of the few bands that defies all this logic. With their roots tied to British punk rock, they have progressed the genre and all the aesthetic it carries with it. The composition and music sounds like bubblegum. You like the taste and keep chewing for more, and keep getting more. A great mix of synths, and guitars always makes sure that the rhythm remains catchy in your mind. But for me why I love 1975 is their completely unapologetic songwriting. The concepts behind their songs delves deep into very niche types of relationships and love. To talk about their range, from 'the sound' which is at its core, a cute pop song about the innocence of love to 'It's not living if it's not with you', which is a song about heroin addiction disguised as a love song. Figure that lol. 'Somebody Else', the sadboi anthem, is a beautiful ballad that describes the feeling of not wanting someone but at the same time not wanting them to be with someone else either. 'Guys' from their new album is a heartfelt tribute to the love he shares with his band members. His argument being, why aren't there love songs about non-romantic relationships? Going a bit further, they also provide commentary on our modern day experience. Taking about social issues, getting older and finding purpose, and even climate change. The first song on their new album features a 5 min spoken work by Greta Thunberg talking about our current crisis and the need to take charge. And I think in the end that's what music is about. It's about translating your experiences and thoughts into a form of art, and using it to create and influence people around you. Their new album just came out.
